Visit Europe’s last great wilderness destination.……..
………Stay at the luxurious Delta Nature Resort
Spread over 1,400 square miles, Romania’s Danube Delta is teeming with natural life. A world heritage site and biosphere reserve, the Delta’s varied habitat is home to virtually thousands of species of birds, fish, fauna & flora. The vast mosaic of channels, lakes, reed-beds and forests are accessible by boat and permit an unforgettable experience of nature at closest proximity. Each of the habitats supports its own collection of avifauna.
Whilst foraging along the channels, you can spot kingfishers, herons, egrets and wide variety of woodland birds. You can observe terns, gulls and occasionally a large flock of Pelicans as they feed and roost in the crystal clear lakes covered with large beds of white and yellow lilies. Look out for coots, grebes, ibis and a profusion of water fowl in the reeds. Up in the branches of the partially submerged trees, there are mixed colonies of cormorants, spoonbills, heron and egrets; the air is buzzing with activity as the young are reared for their winter migration. High in the air you can observe buzzards, sparrow-hawks, falcons and occasionally the white tailed eagle searching for prey.
In addition to exploring the wonders of this natural reserve, the trip gives you an opportunity to experience the history of the region, which can be traced back to 657 BC when the first human settlements were built close by. Visit historic monasteries, sample wine from vineyards dating back to the Roman Empire and savor the finest caviar in the world, the Beluga from the Black Sea. Often referred to as one of Europe’s best kept secrets, the Danube Delta is an inspiring holiday destination for the leisure traveller as well as the serious naturalist.
The Delta Nature Resort is the first and only five star resort in Romania. Overlooking the magnificent Delta plains, the hotel was built and equipped to accommodate an international and discerning clientele. Combining traditional architecture with modern facilities, the resort consists of individual, spacious and superbly comfortable villas with large terraces offering sweeping views over the Delta. Facilities include a gloriously positioned pool and massage/relaxation area, a superbly equipped Exploration Center and an observation tower with terrace. The beautifully appointed bar invites to relax and the ‘Feathers’ restaurant offers a superb variety of local and international dishes made from freshest local ingredients, highlighted by the very best local Beluga Caviar. |

Example itinerary for an extended weekend
Day one - Friday
British Airways dept 09:45 / 15:00
Arrive from London at Bucharest’s Henri Coanda Airport, board a luxury vehicle for the 180 mile transfer to Delta Nature Resort, passing through picturesque villages and small towns and getting a first experience of fascinating rural Romania. Once you have checked in and are comfortable at the Hotel you may attend a briefing by the resort’s exploration team. The day ends with a relaxing dinner at ‘Feathers’.
Day two - Saturday
After breakfast, head out by boat to the Christian Orthodox Saon Monastery. It was built in 1846 and is home to some 40 nuns who run an organic farm on the banks of the picturesque Parches Lake. Here you have lunch prepared by the nuns and served in the refractory adorned by hand painted frescos. After lunch stroll through the chapel and church at Saon before moving on to the Badila Cellars in the Niculetsel vineyards. The vineyards of the area are said to have been planted by Roman soldiers in the 15th century. Sample some of the 20 year old wines from the cellars before heading back to the resort.
Later in the day, board on a boat trip to the Purchelu mixed bird colony close to Tulcea, the county. During this two hour trip you will see a number of the Delta’s bird species such as spoonbills, cormorants, ibis, herons, egrets, and - with a little luck - the white tailed fishing eagle. Depending on season you may see a number of nests with young chicks.
Dinner is a royal treat: sample the famous Romanian Beluga Caviar - said to be amongst the best in the world - and feast on traditional Romanian specialties.
Day three - Sunday
A venture into the heart of the natural reserve: After breakfast we take you to Tulcea, transfer into a boat and explore some of the main channels and lakes of the Delta. In addition to visiting the largest colony of white pelicans in Europe, you can spot most of the birds of the area and navigate the narrow channels that connect the lakes and reed-beds. Lunch is a traditional Delta fish soup, freshly cooked and served on one of the islands en-route. Before returning to the resort, spend some time in Tulcea to see the museums of natural history, anthropology and archeology.
Back at the resort enjoy relaxing massage or a dip in the pool before dinner at ‘Feathers’.
