| Mamaia - The pearl of the litoral
It seems that the name of this resort ("Grandma" or "Grandmother") was, somehow, meant to be, since this is the oldest resort on the Romanian seaside. It was founded in 1906, 5 km North of the Constanta city, on the promontory situated between the Siutghiol Lake (one of the largest Romanian lakes, with a fresh, sweet water) and the Black Sea. After 1919, it has had a fast development due to the construction of the Casino, of the villas and of King Ferdinand's summer residence. Thus, at the beginning of the 60's, Mamaia became one of the most elegant and attractive resorts in the South-Eastern Europe.
Mamaia is suitable especially for family tourism. Its beach (over 8 km in length and 100 to 200 m wide) is remarkable for its fine, golden sand. Heliotherapy is possible for more than 12 hours a day.
At this time, the resort has 61 hotels (of 1 or 4 stars), 14 villas and 3 camping sites.
It has to be mentioned also The Holiday Village, an oasis of originality - providing a combination of Romanian traditions from all over the country. The 31 restaurants of the resort offer a rich menu, with traditional cooking from various regions of Romania or international cooking.
