Stop at Banffy Palace, the most beautiful baroque building in Transylvania, representative of the way of life of the aristocratic class. Journey on to Salva for a visit to the traditional costume shop owned by Virginia Linul: internationally renowned folk artist and designer. Here, you will witness the vibrant colours and artistic styling offered by the varying textile work of Romanian traditional costumes. On your arrival at Vadu Izei you will be transferred to your accommodation.

DAY 2 - Vadu Izei - Sighetu Marmatiei

In the morning, journey to Sighetu Marmatiei, home of the infamous political prison from the communist era now repurposed as a museum, for a tour of the Museum of Communism Victims and the Resistance. This tour will be followed by a visit to the famous Joyful Cemetery at Sapanta, known all over the world for its unusual art. Visitors here can witness Ion Stan Patras’ artistic creations: combining a bas-relief carved in wood, with rustic painting and popular verses. You will stop for lunch along the way. Return to Vadu Izei for dinner and a rest.

DAY 3 - Vadu Izei - Surdesti

After breakfast depart for Budesti: this name belongs to two Romanian villages, Josani and Susani. Stop first at the Budesti Josani Church which lies in a village with a fascinating history: first historically documented in 1361 by the King of Hungary, Louis of Anjou, this church was built in 1642. Continue on to the Budesti Susani Church which was built more than 100 years after the Budesti Josani Church, in 1760. You will then have the opportunity to visit the Desesti and Surdesti Churches which were both built around 1721. The story has it that the initial church was built offsite and then carried to Surdesti by a sinner, who had done something terrible to a young woman, as a form of repentance. Enjoy lunch on the journey. Return to Vadu Izei for dinner and a rest.

DAY 4 - Vadu Izei - Rozavlea

In the morning you will be transferred for your tour of the Barsana, Bogdan Voda and Rozavlea Churches: all of which are thought to have been built around the same period. Rozavlea Church, built 1717-1720, is one of Maramures’ most representative architectural monuments. It is likely you will witness people in traditional costumes roaming the local area. Enjoy lunch on the journey to Rozavlea Church. There will also be an opportunity to visit the traditional artisans of the area: witness hat makers, wood carvers, glass painters and weavers, at work. Return to Vadu Izei for dinner and a rest.
