ITINERARY

DAY 1

Our journey begins at the Targu Mures airport where you will be picked-up by an English speaking assistant who will transfer you to the guest house of your choosing, where you will begin your adventure. You will dine according to your choosing either cooking by yourself or at the local guesthouse.

DAY 2

Begin discovering this wonderful area, its people and day-to-day activities and prepare to be charmed. Begin with a guided visit with a specialist to the patrimony sites such as the fortified churches in the area: Visci, Biertan and Saschiz, UNESCO Heritage Sites. Arrival in Sighisoara, also UNESCO Heritage Site and visit the old Saxon city surrounded by an enclosure wall over 900 m high with its defence towers, the Clock Tower and its figurines, the keepers of time over centuries. Lunch at Count Dracula’s birth place, today a restaurant.

DAY 3

Today the day will be dedicated to discovering traditions and craftsmen being guided by an English speaking specialist in the matter or you can chose biking. The different craftsmen will happily explain their trades to traveller for a small fee. You will also witness shepherding and traditional bread making, courtyard farming, cheese making and preparation of meat. Lunch in the village. After lunch you can have opt for a cart ride or horseback riding or truffle hunting. Cart rides can be organised in almost all the villages mentioned in the programme and the price depends on the lengths and difficulty on the journey. Horseback riding is organised through equestrian centres and locals with horses. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 4

Depending on the departure time, you might still have time to have a specialist guided walk through nature and experience the biodiversity of the area. Transfer to the airport in Targu Mures for the departure flight.

Optional Excursion 1

Breakfast and departure to Brasov, ancient Kronstadt, attested for the first time in the 13th century. Its history dates back to the time of Teutonic Knights proven by its ancient fortifications. Walking visit in the medieval centre: Counsel Square, the famous Black Church (1384-1477) and the impressive quarter Schei. Lunch in a local restaurant. Departure to Rasnov, home to an impressive citadel dating back to the 4th century, built high on the hill to protect it from invaders. Today, the citadel is home to a few craftsmen. Route to Bran for a visit to the famous castle-fort built on a rock, whose history is intertwined with the myth of “Dracula”. Return to the guesthouse, dinner and overnight.

Optional Excursion 2

Breakfast and departure to Cetatea de Blata – Bethlen – Haller Castle for a session of wine tasting session. Cetatea de Balta (Kukullovar – Tarnava citadel) is a settlement in the county of Alba, located on the banks of the Tarnava Mica River. The castle dates back to the end of the 16th century – the first half of the 17th century. The exact dates of construction, as well as the beneficiary, are unknown. Currently, the castle is the image of the Jidvei wine company. It is private property but it can be visited (upon receiving consent from the owners). The castle preserves both the Renaissance architectural elements and a part of the Baroque ones originating from the 1773 renovation. The current owners have added some extra decorations which wish to offer the interior a medieval atmosphere. After wine tasting you will lunch on the estate. Return to the guesthouse. Dinner and overnight.

Optional Excursion 3

Breakfast and departure to Alba Iulia, a city dating back to 5000 years, with a major political destiny. Important political events which occurred here include: the first unification of Romania 1599 and the Grand Unification in Romania in 1918 including the Coronation of King Ferdinand (the 2nd king of Romania) and Queen Mary, Queen Victoria’s granddaughter, in 1922. The National Union Museum and Saint Michael’s Cathedral are the symbols of those events. Departure to Turda Salt Mine, an impressive and breathtaking museum of salt mining. Arrival in Cluj-Napoca and discover on foot the historic centre: Opera Square dominated by the Orthodox Cathedral and the National Theatre built in the eclectic style. Continue to the Union Square where you will find the largest monument in the city, Saint Michael Catholic Church.

Please note: This itinerary is only a guideline and it can be tailor made according to your preferences. Apafi Manor is opened all year round. All other guesthouses are opened between the 1st of April and the 31st of October. Cart rides can be organised in almost all the villages mentioned in the programme and the price depends on the lengths and difficulty of the journey. Horseback riding is organised through equestrian centres and locals with horses.
